New for 2010 PADI eIDC Instructor Development Course (IDC)
At Barefoot Divers we offer a 9 day Instructor Development Course (IDC) instead of the standard 5 day course, taught at other 5 Star IDC Resorts. This includes the Emergency First Response Instructor course as well. An expanded schedule allows us more time in the water, improving your dive skills, honing demonstration techniques, and additional exercises putting you into the role of instructor. The Barefoot IDC program includes:
Instructor Certifications
- Open Water Scuba Instructor
- Emergency First Response Instructor plus Care for Children
IDC Prerequisites
To attend the Barefoot Divers Instructor course you need to:
- have been a certified diver for at least 6 months
- have logged a minimum of 60 dives
- have a current divers medical exam
- be a PADI DM (or equivalent and provide any non PADI certification cards)
- complete the PADI eLearning program
- have current CPR/1st Aid skills (IDC includes the EFR Instructor, so don't worry)
IDC Course Overview
As a new format to the IDC for 2010 PADI has introduced eLearning. Gone are the 16 knowledge reviews (shifting through old periodicals) and now replaced as online presentations with video and interactive question and answer format. Join us at Barefoot a few days prior to beginning the eIDC, get in some dives at no additional cost and take advantage of our wireless network to complete the eLearning sitting in one of our hammocks in between dives, on the deck of our loft apartments or begin now, before coming to Roatan.
During the IDC course, you will learn the benefits of prescriptive teaching, which makes your presentations to students more effective and fun. Training classes are held in our modern, comfortable, air-conditioned, classroom. We have a flat screen TV with surround sound, an LCD projector and use the latest PADI audio and video materials to assist you in learning and in practicing your own academic presentations.
You will learn practical techniques for teaching dive skills in confined water. This is done onsite in the protected waters at the palapa. With guidance from Peter, our resident PADI Course Director, and our IDC Staff Instructor Team, you will have lots of extra time to practice your demonstration quality skills, teaching, and control techniques with language support in Spanish, Dutch and French as well.
The third instructional component takes place in Open Water from one of our 4 dive boats on the south shore of Roatan. Manta, with a large and easy deck to move around makes a great platform to stage our training exercises. Suitable dive sites are less than a 5-minute boat ride away, giving you more practice and less travel time.
During the IDC you’ll also learn business principles related to the recreational scuba industry, as well as risk management techniques and other important issues of being a dive professional in the current marketplace.

IDC Preparation
For candidates arriving prior to their course, we offer local diving at no additional cost and IDC preparation assistance. We have found that Divemasters quite often need to refresh their dive theory and demonstration quality skills. You can arrive a few days early and our staff can help make sure you are ready to start. As we run an extended IDC, there is lots of time for practice during the course as well.
